Parrot Tulip | 6×6″ | oil, resin, gold leaf

I was probably 11 before I saw a tulip and it was mind blowing. Growing up in South Florida, I had to travel to Tennessee to find one. I was passing the yard of my grandparent’s neighbor and I stopped in my tracks. They were kind enough to give me one and I wrapped the stem in tinfoil and carried it like a treasure on the plane home with me. Then I pressed the fleshy leaves into a book to keep forever.

Each small flower in this ongoing series is my nod to the sacred, an echo of religious icons. In their fleeting existence, flowers are a reminder of the impermanence of life and importance of living in the present.

Gold, precious in its scarcity, mirrors the importance of the divine. It isn’t just a color; it’s an illumination, casting a glow that speaks of reverence and transcendence.
